Series: God is My Personal Trainer

Passage: Matthew 4:4

God Speaks to Me Daily through His Word

But He (Jesus) answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied: It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable. Take away the dross from silver and it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness. Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; for it is better that he say to you, “Come up here,” than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen. Proverbs 25:1-7

King Hezekiah ordered copies of some of the proverbs of Solomon to be made. He valued God’s word. When we value the Bible as he did, we will experience the blessings which God has in store for us.

A little history of how kings were to treat God’s word - & how some failed:

  • Each king was to personally make a copy of the law.               Deuteronomy 17:18
  • The kings failed miserably in making copies of the law. It was actually misplaced & then found. II Chronicles 34:8-28
  • Worse yet, one king actually burned a scroll on which was written God’s words to him & the nation. Jeremiah 36:11-32

Just like a personal trainer speaks instructions and encouragement to the trainee, so God does the same through the Bible. It is vital, then, for us to listen to Him daily. Because neglect of the Bible leads to contempt for it.
