The Name

The Path to Freedom – Part 3

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.                 Exodus 20:7 (ESV)

1.)        Why does it matter how we use the LORD’s name?

  • The LORD’s name…reveal GOD to us.

  • The LORD will hold us guilty…when we misuse His name! (Phil. 2:9-11)

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the Lord will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power]. Exodus 20:7 (AMP)

2.) How do we misuse the LORD’s name?

  • _____________________________________________ ‘in the LORD’s name.’
  • We fail ________________________________________ in the LORD’s name.
  • We use the LORD’s name _________________________________________.
  • We pray or sing in the LORD’s name ________________________________.
  • We use the LORD’s name _____________________________. (Matt. 7:19-23)

- “The Lord told me to…”

- “In Jesus’ name…” (As a ‘magical’ word.)

The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LordExodus 34:5

3.) What are the results when we honor the LORD’s name?

  • God will be more real to us. (Exodus 34:4-8)
  • We will love and worship God more wholeheartedly. (Exodus 34:8)
  • We will seek the good of people more fervently. (Exodus 34:9)

Let’s proclaim the name of the LORD and ascribe greatness to HIM! (Deut. 32:3)
