Passage: 1 Samuel 16:6-13
David
“Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
1. A Hero has a “Heart after God.”
- A heart in “pursuit after” God’s heart… leads to a heart “modeled after” God’s heart.
- See Acts 13:22 & 1 Sam. 13:14 - “a man after His own heart”
But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” 11 Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep..” 1 Samuel 16:10-11
2. A Hero can overcome being wounded.
- David didn’t succumb to being wounded. He trusted in God’s view of him!
- See John 1:12, 1 John 3:1 - “children of God”
So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. 1 Samuel 16:13
3. A Hero gets his/her strength from God.
- The source of David’s heroism = Holy Spirit power!
- Christians have the Holy Spirit permanently! (Eph. 1:13-21; John 14:26)
- Admitting you are not a “moral superhero”, gives you access to God’s strength.
- David’s example of confession & repentance. (2 Sam. 12:13-14; Psalm 51.)
- God gives grace (His superpower) to the humble! (1 Pet. 5:7)
Is anything stopping you from being after God’s heart,
overcoming wounds with truth, and being empowered by God?
You can be a Hero!
