A ‘Collation’ on Wise vs. Foolish Living: June 9th & 30th: 12:15 ... 15:2 ... 22:3 ... 29:11
... 24:5,6 ... 28:26 ... 26:11 ... 17:27,28 ... 12:16 ... 25:28 ... 26:3 (Hebrew: ‘kesil’)
... 27:22 (Hebrew: ‘evil’) ... 26:12 (‘kesil’) ...
Now, a short journey into the ‘problem of pain’:
• 3:11,12 – My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor detest His
correction; for whom the LORD loves, He corrects, just as a father the son in
whom He delights.
• Mirrored in the N.T. – Hebrews 12:5-11 - ... “My son, do not despise the
hastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for
whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges (What?!!
Scourging?!!) every son whom He receives.” (But He does this) ... for our
profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present (you think?!), but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
• Certainly not all pain is a result of our mistakes, but in any case we would do
well to ask: “Lord, what are You trying to teach me?”
A surefire path: 13:20 – He who walks with wise men will be wise ...
Fruits & rewards of living wisely:
• 14:35 – The king’s favor is toward a wise servant ...
• 15:24 – The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.
• 19:8 – He who gets wisdom loves his own soul ...
• 21:20 – There is desirable treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise ...
• 24:5,6 – A wise man is strong, yes a man of understanding increases strength
...
Wisdom’s superiority: 16:16 – How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
