Passage: Matthew 16:13-20
The Last(ing) Commitment: Belong – Build – Be the church
1 Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
In the end we will all leave a legacy. Ecclesiastes 2:16 “For the wise man, like the fool, will
not be long remember; in days to come both will be forgotten. Like the fool, the wise man
too must die!”
In Solomon’s own words:
- The unwise: leave a monument, a memorial (stone) of their existence in this world!
- The wise: leave a movement of God, a memorial of a life that reflected Jesus Christ!
But with God success…Joshua 1:8 “Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything in it then you will
be prosperous and successful.”
The Last(ing) Commitment
1. “you are the Christ” Commit to: B ______ to His church.
· Colossians 1:18 - And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have supremacy.
· Colossians 2:19 - They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
- 2. “I will build my church” Commit to: B _______ His church.
- John 18:36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.”
- Jesus Christ is looking to build a spiritual empire – it’s called heaven.
- If it’s good enough for Jesus then it’s good enough for me. John 17:4 “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”
- Reality check: Jesus “lives, breathes and eats this cause.” John 4:34
- “I will give you the keys to the kingdom” Commit to: B ___ His church.
- We are in the driver’s seat. It’s about ownership! ___________________________
- God has already equipped the church. Ephesians 4:7-8 “But to each one of us grace
has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on
high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.”
- There are no more excuses left! _______________________________
Edward Hale: “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”
The last(ing) commitment – is an everlasting commitment; Belong, Build, Be the church!
