Passage: 1 Samuel 30:1-6
David’s Nadir
Stories, Part 1
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4
Then David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God. I Samuel 30:6
A nadir is a low point (or the lowest point!). What do you do when you hit a nadir – a ‘trough’? We can learn a lot from David:
- He ‘strengthened himself in the LORD his God’
- The Psalms he wrote speak to the depth of his relationship with God.
e.g. Psalm 13 …Psalm 142…
- He claimed God’s promises – ‘rhemas.’
- He refocused from the problem to his God.
- He then sang & praised his God.
We will also face ‘nadirs’
- Deepen your relationship w/ God beforehand through the Bible & prayer…
- Remember His deliverances in the past.
- Claim His promises (rhemas) and cling to them.
► And thereby take your place in God’s Hall of Fame for Faith – Hebrews 11
► ‘Remind’ God of the promises, pray them back to Him.
- Sing to Him & praise Him.
- Lastly, resist the temptation to isolate, come to ‘church’ even if you don’t feel like it:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25
Personal history …
A few perspectives on nadirs:
- First, they are coming.
- It pays to build the foundation of your life on God & His Word now, ahead of time, because storms will come. (see Mt. 7:24-27)
- If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. Pr. 24:10
- Very often, your nadir will be followed quickly by a ‘zenith’!
